The Committee

Clare Clouting - Chair

Clare is a food safety and quality professional with over 20 years’ experience, including 9 years at PepsiCo in their Frito-Lay division. Most recently at Good Drinks Australia and the board of the Independent Brewers Association.

Clare specialises in the creation and implementation of quality and food safety programs including sensory programs and HACCP and in March Clare started her own Company; Athena Quality with the aim of helping the industry produce consistently great beer safely. She believes in making quality management accessible to all and getting all levels of business actively engaged in quality.

Thomas - Reports Manager

After completing a degree in Science which included doing some research into yeast genetics during wine fermentation, Thomas decided to pursue his real passion: beer.

He's spent over a decade working in the beer industry now, drifting through all things Quality: quality control release to packaging, microbiology, running sensory panels and implementing quality assurance initiatives like BIRA. Despite his passion for quality beer, his focus has currently shifted to IT systems used to drive a brewery.

Outside of beer, he enjoys motorcycling, attempting triathlons and travelling when looking after two young children permits it.

Dan (vb) - Treasurer / Secretary

Daniel is a highly experienced Quality Manager, Brewer, Distiller, and Cider Maker in the Asia Pacific region. Now employed by Lallemand Brewing, where he provides support to hundreds of breweries. With a strong background in quality control and quality assurance, he previously served as the Head of Quality for Young Henry’s Brewery in Sydney, Australia, where he established quality control and assurance protocols that are now widely viewed as the industry standard for craft and medium-sized breweries.

Daniel’s expertise extends beyond his on-the-job experience, having completed courses at the prestigious Siebel Institute of Technology, including coursework with White Labs in San Diego, USA, and Versuchs-und Lehranstalt für Brauerei (VLB) in Berlin, Germany.

Daniel's passion for the brewing industry has been recognized by the Independent Brewers Association, which awarded him the Young Gun of the Industry award in its inaugural year.

In his spare time, Daniel enjoys teaching microbrewing at the TAFE NSW Ultimo Campus in Sydney.

Jon Seltin - President

Jon is Head Brewer of Brick Lane Brewing, an independent brewery in Melbourne Australia producing beers and ciders for a range on Brick Lane and partner brands.

Prior to Brick Lane, Jon was Head Brewer at Hawkers Beer and Bright Brewery.  Sensing the need for a ‘lightweight’ proficiency testing scheme for the growing number of breweries in Australia, Jon proposed the formation of BIRA in 2017 at the Australian craft brewers conference, and was excited to see the support the proposal had from industry.

He’s since presented on the BIRA and the scheme’s results at the 2018 IBD Asia Pacific convention in Wellington, and looks forward to helping grow membership and promote proficiency testing in breweries in the region.
